In our research training seminars at the 9-12 level we are finding success using the book: Getting Started in Calligraphy by Nancy Baron. The book illustrates practical tips in how to begin (for example the position of the paper), loosening up exercises to help you hold the pen correctly and clear lessons in both Italic and Black Letter calligraphic styles. The lessons give pointers in how to shape the letters as well as some common mistakes that can be made. In her introduction Ms. Baron writes that the lessons were “written with the easily frustrated beginner in mind” and ends the introduction with the advice to “Take your time, relax, and enjoy yourself.” So far the book has done this for us. We will let you know what happens when we use it with children.
